Web Sites are More Than Just Business Cards

I love designing web sites, but I also love the fight of boosting traffic to a site. I meet a lot of people who just want to be able to say they have a web site with their name, address, and phone number on it. Why not expand your physical store to an online store? Many people do not understand the importance of good SEO and what it can do for their business.

I understand that people don’t want to learn SEO, but i can wrap my brain around why you wouldn’t want more customers. Having a web site that is not found in the search engines is like having an office that is 90% unused space. With a correctly optimized web site you can double or triple your monthly sales, you just have to get competitive. It is not hard to steal customers away from the big web sites with a bit of your advertising budget or some good old fashioned hard work.

One of the sites optimized by Goatsmilktavern Studios sells 3 times as much merchandise off their site as they do out of their physical location. They didn’t have to hire more employees or move to a larger location, they just moved up in the search engine results pages.

If you have a web site that gets 100 visitors a day with no optimization, can you imagine the sales jump if you had 2000 or even 3000 visitors a day? That is what SEO does for your online business, it is like putting up billboards all over the roads leading to your store and in every store like yours. Every time someone searches for a product you and 1000 other people sell, you could be the first thing they see. With a well managed PPC campaign or link building strategy you could even be on your competitors web site.

Web sites are much more than online business cards, they are doorways to your products and services. SEO can turn your small store location to a place that can sell things to an infinite number of customers at one time.
